Guyana
Perched on the northern edge of the Brazilian Amazon, Guyana
is a hothouse of tropical flora and fauna biodiversity. The interior
is uninhabited, except for scattered Amerindian tribes.
Kaieteur Falls is one of the worlds natural wonders. The
Potaro River flows over a sandstone table mountain, a tepui, into
a deep gorge, an astonishing 822 feet below. Kaieteur National
Park supports a genuinely unique environment including the giant
tank bromeliads. The striking Guiana Cock-of-the-Rock nests near
the falls trail as well. Rock View Lodge, is your oasis in the
midst of this lost world.
Rise before dawn for a walk through the rainforest observing
birds and wildlife along the trail. Your guide then paddles you
on the Burro Burro River for opportunities to observe giant river
otters, tapir, spider monkeys, and other chance sightings of rainforest
animals. Return to an Amerindian village for dining and a nights
lodging.
At Karanambu Ranch, you are hosted by owner, Diane McTurk, well
known for her work rehabilitating orphaned giant river otters.
The savannah covers hundreds of square miles including parts of
Venezuela and Brazil. Wetlands here are extentions of the Amazon
and support the giant Victoria water lily. Dinner will include
real survivor stories of life in the Rupununi savannah!
Not for the timid, this is true jungle adventure. Travel is by
4x4 vehicles over sometimes extremely rough terrain. Some lodging
is without hot water or electricity.
