Belizean Moments

Belizean
Moments…A record breaking beginning to our trip –
50 degrees at Chaa Creek (Snake Creek in Mayan – remember
your stories from the Tikal guide?) the blankets helped for those
who remembered we had them.
The next day brought a tour of the Mayan underworld at Vaca
Cave. On the way we watched two Bat Falcons diving on a white
morpho butterfly just getting in practice for the real thing -
bats, at dusk.
And indeed we did observe bats at Vaca where the Mayan pots
linked past to us in the present, like the great Ceiba tree itself,
linking the underworld to the heavens. On the journey home the
heavens brought forth a migrating flock of fork-tailed flycatchers,
bathing in the roadside pool, a remarkable sight in the afternoon
light.
The next day brought the great city of Tikal surrounded by the
vast forests of Peten, home of many more migrant birds of which
we saw quite a few, wood thrushes and hooded warblers much easier
to see here than at home. This is their home where the emerald
toucanets roam.
From Chaa Creek to Turneffe Flats from fishing for tarantulas
to fishing for bonefish - quite a change. The Blue hole and boobies
of Half Moon Caye besieged by frigates and the quiet colorful
world of the reef, a rainforest under the sea. Our fish list rivals
the bird list – you better Belize it Mon!
Cheers,
Tom
